Kris Kristofferson's reputation as a leading country songwriter is based primarily on two extraordinary albums: his 1971 debut ME AND BOBBIE McGEE and THE SILVER TONGUED DEVIL AND I, its 1973 follow-up. In the decade preceding these releases, country music edged closer to mainstream pop in both its arrangements and the subject matter of its song. Kristofferson slammed the breaks on that trend with his unblinking portraits of seedy barroom lowlifes, loose women, and free-spirited hippie freaks. Audiences ate it up, and outlaw country was born.
Many of the songs on SILVER TONGUED DEVIL will be familiar even to those who have never heard Kristofferson's versions. "Loving Her Was Easier" was a hit for both Roger Miller and Tompall and the Glaser Brothers; Waylon Jennings scored with "The Taker"; and Roy Drusky took "Jody and the Kid" onto the charts. Movie buffs no doubt already know that this album was Travis Bickle's (TAXI DRIVER) favorite and "The Pilgrim-Chapter 33" his self-chosen theme song. Bottomless source of hits, cultural artifact, and historical landmark, SILVER TONGUED DEVIL is all these things, and a damn good album to boot.
