Ray Price gave fellow Texan Willie Nelson one of his first jobs in Nashville, hiring the young songwriter to play bass with his honky-tonk outfit. Twenty years later, Nelson returned the favor, handing Price a big break by inviting the fading star to record a duet album. The resulting disc, SAN ANTONIO ROSE, was a surprise hit, propelled up the country charts on the strength of the number three single "Faded Love."
A number of the songs on SAN ANTONIO ROSE are, like "Faded Love," bygone Western swing hits originally popularized by Bob Wills and Floyd Tillman. Others are honky-tonk standards, among them two of Price's early hits, "I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)" and "Crazy Arms." Two classic Nelson compositions, "Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Night Life," are also included. Stately vocal performances along with rock-solid arrangements and production have helped SAN ANTONIO ROSE stand the test of time.
