Possibly the Charlie Daniels Band's most purely country-oriented album, 1976's SADDLE TRAMP fits in perfectly with the Waylon Jennings/Willie Nelson/Jerry Jeff Walker outlaw country movement of the mid-'70s. The seven lengthy tracks give the band, led by Daniels' fiddle but also including guitarist Tom Crain and underrated pianist Joel "Taz" DiGregorio, plenty of room to stretch out, but their explorations never dissolve into pointless jamming.
The title track is a perfect example, as it shifts from a mournful ballad to a hot Western swing bash, with Daniels' Bob Wills-influenced fiddle and DiGregorio's jazzy piano licks trading off over a swinging rhythm section. Elsewhere, "Dixie on My Mind" features one of Daniels' hottest fiddle solos, in a country-rock setting that doesn't skimp on either genre.
