David Allan Coe is the original redneck, and he's proud of it. He sings of his white trash roots on "Long Haired Redneck," claims his rightful place as one of the original country outlaws on "Willie, Waylon And Me" and professes himself a down-home hell-raiser on "If That Ain't Country - Part 2)." Coe works overtime on this live album to play up his image as a hard-drinking, authority-baiting, tattooed ex-con. The rebel stance is no pose for Coe, and that's what makes his cockeyed Americana work.
Backed by a blazing country-rock band that includes former Allman brothers guitarist Warren Haynes, Coe performs with an earnest drive, putting every song across like his life depends on it. His skills as a country songsmith serve him in good stead here; he is after all, the man who wrote "Take This Job And Shove It," which is also included. IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY is a good introduction to Coe for those unfamiliar with his work, and a powerful live document for his fans.
