Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."

JIMMY RANEY FEATURING BOB BROOKMEYER
Music Lover: JazzVet from Spain -- November, 4, 2008
Much good has been said about this session, recorded in July and August 1956 in New York City, and all that's been said is justified. Both the main protagonists show their playing and improvising skills at their absolute best and each makes a contribution on the composing and arranging side. Raney - often referred to as a "cool jazz" guitarist - certainly kindles a flame or two here and Brookmeyer's creativity is what his long-time fans have come to expect - just first class! Two pianists are listed - Hank Jones and Richard Katz - but I've been unable to find complete personnel details anywhere which say which tracks the two appear on respectively. What I have unearthed is that Katz appears on "How Long etc" and "The Flag is Up" whilst Jones is listed for "Get Off That Roof". Buy this great example of 1950s jazz and your money will be well spent.
