This is part of RCA's "Falling In Love With . . ." series. (You can also fall in love with Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Paul Desmond, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong.) As they say in the liner notes, "Dim the lights. Light some candles. You are in for a treat." And it's true. This is classy stuff.
Sinatra was with Dorsey from 1940-42, and it was a great combination. Two of the first songs they recorded, "Say It" and Polka Dots and Moonbeams" (both included here) are classics. Sinatra emulated Dorsey's "long breath" trombone technique, and Dorsey's graceful and succinct arrangements complemented Sinatra's light, penetrating tone.
As a mood collection, these 16 tracks work well. You can't go wrong with songs like: "I Could Make You Care," "Stardust," "Night And Day" and "I'll Never Smile Again." There are more well-rounded Dorsey/Sinatra compilations, ("The Popular Frank Sinatra, Vol. 1), and for true enthusiasts, there is the boxed set ("The Song Is You"). But if you want to fall in love, this will do just fine.
