Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's flowing, inventive style and restless imagination originated in the Charlie Parker tradition. Though he's capable of bebop-style pyrotechnics, his softer side predominates on this two-CD primer, which spans the inspired, West Coast-influenced "Alto Madness" and the lyrical "Solar," as well as the agitated hard bop of "Dacor," recorded with drummer Art Taylor.
