During the transitional period between the recording of his landmark albums of the 1950s, BIRTH OF THE COOL and KIND OF BLUE, trumpet legend Miles Davis released several albums for the Prestige label. This era not only found Davis streamlining his distinctive horn sound, but it marked the formation of his first great quintet, rounded out by saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. That group is represented by four tracks on this concise collection, including "The Theme," a charmingly swaggering number, and the gentle Ahmad Jamal-inspired tunes "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" and "I Could Write a Book." The remaining songs on PRESTIGE PROFILES present Davis collaborating with other luminaries such as saxophonist Sonny Rollins and Modern Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis. This excellent 2005 set also includes a bonus disc, which cherry-picks tracks from Prestige dates by artists featured here such as Coltrane, Rollins, and Garland.
