Who bassist John Entwistle wasted no time in issuing his second solo release, WHISTLE RHYMES, just a year after his debut, SMASH YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL. The follow up follows the same Who-like direction as its predecessor, with Entwistle tackling both vocal and bass duties. Of course, left to his own devices, he comes up with with a more macabre tone and grislier subject matter than with The Who.
If there was any doubt that Entwistle was one of rock's greatest bassists, his playing on WHISTLE RHYMES turns out to be a splendid showcase for his powerhouse skills. Highlights include the surprisingly melodic "Apron Strings," as well as the Who-ish album opener, "Ten Little Friends." Out of all of Entwistle's solo releases, WHISTLE RHYMES is easily one of his finest.
