Following their hit ABBA tribute album, 1999's THE ABBA GENERATION, the A*Teens' completely unironically titled sophomore release finds the barely post-pubescent Swedish popsters plowing a similar Europop furrow. The songs are undeniably perky and kid-friendly, although time will tell whether they have the longevity of the tunes that inspired them.
"Halfway Around the World," with its unimpeachably vivacious rhythm and the cute, Swedish-accented vocals that recall, as they're meant to, those of ABBA, is a highlight, with typically dazzling production effects, while listening to "Sugar Rush" is the sonic equivalent of ingesting a gallon of Coca-Cola. Spanish-inflected acoustic guitar is prominent in several spots throughout the album, giving TEEN SPIRIT a pleasant, airy, European holiday feel. The kids in the A*Teens are undeniably fresh faced and innocent-looking enough for public consumption, and they've certainly chosen the right models to base their careers on.
