Like the domestic release SUFFERIN' MIND, THE THINGS THAT I USED TO DO collects Slim's classic 1953-'55 recordings for the New Orleans-based Specialty label, the sides which almost all fans agree are the guitarist's most essential work. Ray Charles was Slim's musical director and piano player on these sessions, but while Charles' inimitable playing is instantly recognizable on tracks like "Well I Done Got Over It," these songs are Guitar Slim's all the way. Besides the classic title track, "Sufferin' Mind," "Bad Luck Is On Me" and the prison blues "Letter To My Girlfriend" are among the highlights. The sound quality and packaging are excellent.
