Although extremely popular in the UK and beyond, collections of steel drum music have been few and far between, with Jamaica's contribution to the sound particularly overlooked. This set makes up for lost time and features some of the finest steel band sounds produced in Jamaica during the sixties and seventies.
Recording information: 1957 - 1971.
Ensemble: The WIRL All Star Steel Band.
The steel drum, or pan, has been a staple of the Jamaican music scene since its first appearance in the 1930s. Often seen as a tourist clich?, the instrument gets an intriguing second look in this compilation of classic steel drum tracks by a half-dozen of the most popular Jamaican orchestras of the 1950s and '60s. Songs like the traditional "Yellow Bird" and "Big Bamboo" are given mellifluous workouts by the West India Regiment Steel Band and the WIRL All Star Steel Band, but the highlight here is a wonderfully chaotic version of "The Magnificent Seven," complete with high-life rhythm and cowboy whoops.
