The Seasons' second album of 1964 (remember when rock bands had a work ethic?) is in the band's typical album format of the period; it's based around a recent hit and fleshed out with a mixture of originals by their genius producer/songwriter Bob Crewe and '50s R&B and doo-wop tunes the group had cut their teeth on, in this case including Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" and the Penguins "Earth Angel." The group's harmonies, however, are glorious throughout, and the album's hit--"Dawn (Go Away)"--just happens to be the Seasons' first genuine masterpiece, a classic '60s single powered by a soaring melody, haunting wrong-side-of-the tracks lyrics, and inspired production (including unforgettable closing fills by legendary New York session drummer Buddy Saltzman).
