Gram Parsons is one of those rare artists whose influence on music vastly exceeds his record sales. As a member of the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, and the Flying Burrito Brothers--and then later as a solo artist--Parsons' recordings rarely made a dent in the Billboard charts. Even so, today's country traditionalists and alt.country rockers alike trace their roots to Parsons and his soulful fusion of country, rock, and R&B.
Just six months before he died of a drug overdose, Parsons and his band performed an on-air radio concert to promote his then-current album, GP. That concert, subsequently released as LIVE 1973, captures Parsons and his band in all their ragged glory. This album would be notable for no other reason than that it features a then-unknown Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals, but Harris' presence is just one of LIVE 1973's many assets. Parson's touring band, for example, is a spirited bunch that infuses Parsons' honky-tonk with a rock-and-roll attitude. Parsons and Harris sing beautifully together, running through a number of songs from GP, an achingly slow version of "Love Hurts," and the Merle Haggard rarity "California Cottonfields." A must for all true country fans.
