The kind of musical expertise and virtuosity that fans have come to expect from later CDs is apparent even on this 1969 Chieftains sophomore release. The younger Chieftains play with the same kind of verve displayed in their later CDs.
Highlights on CHIEFTAINS 2 include "Planxty George Brabazon" a piece that brings us to an early period in poetical Ireland, while "Bean an Fhir Rua" is a song whose many versions tell of the frustrated love of a traveling tailor for a married woman. Paddy Maloney's Uilleann pipe introduction is stately and sorrowful, but as the fiddles and tin whistle enter into the mix, the music gradually brightens, ultimately becoming altogether more hopeful. The Irish harp composer Carolan (1670-1738) wrote the words and music to this charming drinking song.
