GREATEST HITS OF THE 80'S could more accurately be called HIS EPIC HITS, VOLUME 2, since it picks up where the latter disc (which includes Haggard's hits through 1984) leaves off. The disc chronicles Haggard's singles output between 1985 and 1989, the last year he enjoyed significant chart success.
After spending the first half of the decade concentrating on melancholy ballads, Haggard turned to the light, uptempo songs that dominate this collection. Pleasant, sprightly fare like "A Friend In California" and "Let's Chase Each Other Around The Room" benefit greatly from Haggard's supple vocals and his band's expert playing. The collection also includes several moving ballads, among them "A Place To Fall Apart," "Natural High," and "Chill Factor." Although not on a par with Haggard's great work of the '60s and '70s, this collection still outshines most of what everyone else in Nashville was doing at the time.
