A 10-track budget-price compilation covering Asleep at the Wheel's '70s tenure at Epic Records, SWING TIME is an excellent though unfortunately brief look at the most fecund period of this long-running Western swing band's work. As usual, SWING TIME is heavy on the covers, but few bands had tastes as catholic and well-rounded as this group, and their versions are invariably hot.

Bob Wills' unassailable "San Antonio Rose" sounds as terrific as always, and leader Ray Benson invests Ernest Tubbs' "I'm Walkin' the Floor Over You" with true honky-tonk passion. Of the originals, Benson's "Don't Ask My Why (I'm Going to Texas)" is an outlaw country classic, but the disc saves the best for last, with an outstanding version of "Hot Rod Lincoln" by the group's Austin compadres Commander Cody And The Lost Planet Airmen. This is an excellent introduction to this terrific band.
