Throughout its 30-plus year career, Western swing revival band Asleep at the Wheel has released numerous studio albums and even visited the country charts. It is as a live act, however, that the band built its reputation, and not surprisingly, it has released several live albums over the course of its career. GREATEST HITS LIVE AND KICKIN', as its name indicates, focuses on the band's best-known material; the inclusion of solid performances also makes it the definitive Asleep at the Wheel live album.
LIVE AND KICKIN' skips the band's most successful chart single ("The Letter That Johnnie Walker Read") but touches all other bases, scoring big with "House of Blue Lights," "Miles and Miles of Texas," the Louis Jordan classic "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," and Bob Wills' "Take Me Back to Tulsa/Stay All Night." Benson's vocals are strong throughout, but the emphasis here is on the band's expert ensemble playing and mind-bending solos, just as it ought to be on a Western swing album. Fans will certainly enjoy this set of boot-scootin' boogie.
