With GO WEST YOUNG MAN, Christian pop performer Michael W. Smith made his first major attempt at courting the secular market. The plan worked wonderfully, with the record eventually going platinum, based largely on the success of the single "Place in This World," which showcases Smith's sensitive songcraft and emotive vocals. Paired with HEART IN MOTION by Smith's friend and frequent collaborator Amy Grant, the two releases make for the highest-profile early-1990s CCM crossover albums.
