This budget-priced compilation presents ten highlights from the Everly Brothers' brief sojourn on RCA Records in the early 1970s. The brothers didn't have any hits on RCA, but they did show excellent taste in songwriters, and that seems to be what the word "classics" in the title is intended to suggest. Here are songs written by Jesse Winchester, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Roger Miller, John Denver, Mickey Newbury, and others, performed in the neo-traditionalist country-rock style the Everlys had adopted by 1972. Of course, those writers had already recorded the songs themselves, which made the Everlys' versions unnecessary at the time, but their performances, paced by banjos, fiddles, and pedal steel guitars, are excellent, nevertheless. ~ William Ruhlmann
