More Soul is a three-disc set collection of soul and R&B songs from the Sony archives. The first track dates from 1963 (Major Lance's infectious "The Monkey Time") and the last is from 1995 (Jon B.'s "Pretty Girl"). In between you'll find classic soul (Joe Simon's "The Chokin' Kind"), smooth Philly soul (the O'Jays' "For the Love of Money," the Manhattans' "A Change Is Gonna Come"), disco (Johnnie Taylor's "Disco 9000"), late-'70s pop-soul (Cheryl Lynn's "Got to be Real," Earth, Wind & Fire's "After the Love Has Gone"), contemporary R&B (Brownstone's "I Can't Tell You Why," Des'ree's "You Gotta Be"), and some left-field choices (like the Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today"). There is no denying that the majority of the songs are very strong and that the disc is like a history lesson. The problem is that the sequencing is a little off, which leads to many jarring segues between eras and styles. It is also a little bit of a stretch to think that fans of Philly soul are also going to enjoy the modern sounds of the C+C Music Factory, for example. If you are that kind of person, then you may well enjoy More Soul. Others will more segmented tastes should look elsewhere. ~ Tim Sendra
