In the early '70s, Doug Sahm made two fine albums for Atlantic Records, DOUG SAHM AND BAND and TEXAS TORNADO (later adopted as the name of his collective band in the early '90s). Sahm's broad sweep of rootsy and honest American musics, from Texas blues to big band jazz and country, was a natural fit for producer Jerry Wexler (who produced many of the label's great '60s soul sides). This collection draws from both albums and includes unreleased numbers.
Though they immediately sound like standards, these songs are primarily Sahm originals. The players are also notable, including Dr. John, David Bromberg, David "Fathead" Newman, Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyer, Andy Statman, and even Bob Dylan (who also contributes his "Wallflower" to the set). This is a wonderful companion to THE BEST OF DOUG SAHM & THE SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET, a collection that mostly predates these recordings. As a great introduction to Sahm or as a wonderful overview, ATLANTIC SESSIONS is essential music.
