Admittedly, the years between 1975 and 2002 weren't Rod Stewart's best, compared to the streak he had at the beginning of his career with albums like EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY and GASOLINE ALLEY. Despite having such a huge legacy to live up to, Stewart managed to perform enough great music to warrant ENCORE: THE VERY BEST OF - VOL. 2. Always quick to peg favorite composers, Rod the Mod's preferences are front and center on this anthology. Among the most notable are a string-soaked live version of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," an in-concert team-up with Ron Wood on Sam Cooke's "Havin' a Party," and a straightforward delivery of Cat Stevens' "The First Cut Is the Deepest." Soundtrack songs are also included from films like LEGAL EAGLES ("Love Touch") and NIGHT SHIFT ("That's What Friends Are For"). Plenty of near-forgotten collaborations get featured, including those with the Temptations ("The Motown Song"), Jeff Beck ("Infatuation"), and someone called Helicopter Girl who sounds suspiciously like Macy Gray ("Don't Come Around Here"). As the selections on ENCORE prove, Rod Stewart is the kind of legendary talent whose extra songs would serve as frontline material for any other artist.
