The excellent two-disc compilation ANTHOLOGY 1968-85 was the first comprehensive overview of the varied career of pop maverick Todd Rundgren. Opening with the first hit by his '60s psych-pop group the Nazz, "Open My Eyes," and continuing through the string of classic '70s AM pop hits that made his name--"Hello It's Me," "Couldn't I Just Tell You," etc.--the set performs the invaluable service of pruning Rundgren's later career into more manageable shape. Between his jazz-rock group Utopia and an increasingly experimental series of solo albums, Rundgren's late-'70s/early-'80s career is sometimes hard to get a handle on. But with highlights like the sweet "Can We Still Be Friends," the hard-rocking "Time Heals," and the stomping "Bang the Drum All Day," it's somehow easier in retrospect to gain focus on the albums from which these tracks were lifted. An essential collection for fans; neophytes may want a single-disc collection to start.
