In the '80s, singer/accordionist Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural emerged as Zydeco's first crossover star since the glory days of Clifton Chenier. While Chenier stayed close to the Zydeco tradition, Dural's brand of Louisiana music stretches to encompass R&B, funk, and rock & roll. Released at the height of Dural's initial popularity, ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS is a definitive statement. His accordion style emphasizes feel over flash, and even when he's engaging in a squeezebox workout over a furious tempo, as on the R&B-inflected highlight "Hot Tamale Baby," he never feels the need to show off his chops. Equally impressive is Dural's singing style, a homey mix of New Orleans flavor and bluesy grit. Ever the eclectic, he guides his band through Zydeco versions of the Blasters's Chuck Berry-like "Marie Marie," Bob Dylan's countryish "On a Night Like This," and Booker T & The MG's soul instrumental "Time is Tight" with equal aplomb.
