As the title suggests, this 10-track collection consists entirely of previously unreleased material, apparently recorded for a proposed Tom Jones country album that was never released. While the idea of Tom Jones performing country music may seem odd to the uninitiated, Jones is a longtime fan of the music--check out HOT COUNTRY NIGHTS on 32 Records for a taste of country songs as recorded on Jones' short-lived early '80s variety show--and he performs it surprisingly well.

Jones' delivery is smoother and more straightforward on this album, which fits the more delicate material--like an excellent, sympathetic rendition of Don Williams' "I Believe in You"--perfectly. While FROM THE VAULTS is not an earth-shattering addition to the Tom Jones oeuvre, it's an entertaining curio.
