"...At its heart it has the damnedest, most accomplished, most infuriating, most intriguing heroine the screen has accommodated since Bette Davis in her prime..."
A highly intelligent woman working on a research fellowship in London supplements her income as a professional escort. She is introduced to a powerful English diplomat and becomes involved in an affair which leads her into a world of mystery and danger.
This offbeat drama focuses on the relationship between British diplomat Lord Bulbeck and Dr. Lauren Slaughter, an American who's a political scholar by day and a prostitute by night. The two meet at a dinner party and he soon becomes one of her regular evening clients. However, complications develop for the independent Dr. Slaughter when Lord Bulbeck starts falling in love with her. Before long, she also gets drawn into a complex web of political intrigue involving the Lord and a group of Arabs.
