21 January 1948, West Point, Mississippi, USA. A third cousin of Howlin Wolf, Young has sufficient talent not to have to dwell on the fact. Singing in church from an early age helped her to develop both flexibility and control in her vocal technique. That continued after her family moved to Chicago in 1956, although she did not take up blues singing until 1971. During the 80s, she toured Europe on numerous occasions, while at home she played Bessie Smith in the stage show The Heart Of The Blues, alongside Valerie Wellington. In 1988, Young financed the recording of her first album, released on her own Black Lightning label. Three years later, she re-recorded its title track as part of Travelin Light, an album of largely original material on which she was backed by members of the Legendary Blues Band.
