You Am I

Up until the early 90s, most of Australia’s best know rock imports seemed to fit neatly into categories of heavy metal (AC/DC), punk (Radio Birdman), or pop rock (Men At Work, INXS). This situation changed with the emergence of bands such as You Am I, who embraced alternative music but also demonstrated a keen ear for a sweet pop melody.

Formed in Sydney during 1990, the band’s original core centred around Tim Rogers (vocals/guitar), Nick Tischler (bass), and Jaimme Rogers (drums) - a year later, Tischler and Jaimme Rogers were replaced by Andy Kent and Mark Tunaley, respectively. From 1991-92, You Am I issued four EPs via independent labels before signing a recording contract with Warner Brothers Records. After catching a live set by the trio at the 1993 Big Day Out Festival, Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Renaldo signed on to produce You Am I’s debut, 1993’s Sound As Ever.
