Progressive bluegrass band formed in 1998 in Nederland, Colorado, USA, by banjo player Dave Johnston. A few years earlier, he had met mandolin player Jeff Austin when both were students in Urbana, Illinois. Bringing in bass player Ben Kauffman and guitarist Adam Aijala they called themselves the Yonder Mountain String Band and began performing contemporary bluegrass music. They gained a following and within a year had formed their own recording company and made their first album. Although they continued to play the club circuit they proved that they could hold audiences in larger venues with a 2000 appearance at San Franciscos Fillmore Auditorium.
The individual members of the band are highly skilled instrumentalists and sing forcefully and with considerable enthusiasm. They draw their repertoire from a wide stylistic range, with touches of rock amid sheaves of contemporary bluegrass. By tapping into the large audience of their own...
