Biography

29 May 1967, Waynesboro, Georgia, USA. Gordon was born into a musical family, his father, Lucius Gordon, being a classical pianist and teacher, and a lover of the blues. At first, he played piano but also learned to play clarinet, bassoon, bass, drums and tuba, before choosing the trombone at the age of 12. By this time the family had moved to Augusta, where all six Gordon children were displaying musical abilities. As a young teenager, he played in the Georgia All-State Concert And Jazz Band and also in McDonalds All-American High School Marching Band And Jazz Band. He attended A&M University at Tallahassee, Florida where, during his sophomore year, 1987, he attended a master class conducted by Wynton Marsalis. He played with several high school bands and in the late 80s played professionally with Marcus Roberts and others before joining Marsalis’ band in June 1989.
