Hiram Winard Harper, 4 June 1962, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Born into a very musical family, Harper began playing drums at the age of five. At eight years old he was a member of a rock band led by his brother Danny (trumpet/piano). Later, he switched to jazz and from the start of the 80s was a member of bands led by several distinguished musicians, among them Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin, and from 1984 played for almost four years in Betty Carter’s trio. In 1985, Harper formed the Harper Brothers band with another brother, Philip Harper and this group stayed together until 1991. Concurrent with this, Harper played in groups led by Stan Getz, Ray Bryant, Houston Person and Tommy Flanagan. The Harper Brothers had considerable success on tour and on record, Remembrance spending two months on Billboard’s jazz chart in 1991.
