Biography
After the demise of the Young Marble Giants in 1980, Alison Statton (March 1958, Cardiff, Wales; vocals, bass) and fellow Cardiff native Spike (guitarist, viola) moved to London. After teaming up the following year with Simon Booth (b. 12 March 1956), who worked at Mole Jazz record shop, they formed Weekend. Their debut single on Rough Trade Records, The View From Her Room, produced by Simon Jeffes of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, presented a breezy jazz-shuffle driven by Stattons excellent bass-line. Among the studio support were two veterans of the British jazz scene, Harry Beckett (trumpet, flugelhorn) and former Centipede member Larry Stabbins (b. 9 September 1949; tenor sax).
