Biography
Of the several fine male soul duos, the unrelated Erving Wallace and Johnny Simon were one of the earliest to record in the gospel-based southern-soul style. Raised in Atlanta, they attended the Archer High School, and are said to have had their own six-piece band in the late 50s when they were only 14 and 16 years old. Simon handled most of the vocals and doubled on saxophone, while Wallace played guitar and wrote new material. In 1963-4, the Wallace Brothers cut the gospel-styled Faith/Ill Let Nothing Separate Us, Precious Words/Youre Mine, and Lovers Prayer/Love Me Like I Love You. Some of these tracks were cut at Rick Halls Fame studio in Muscle Shoals where Hall had successfully recorded early black soul material like Arthur Alexanders You Better Move On, and Jimmy Hughes Im Qualified.
