Swedish death metal can still focus more on power than on melody, despite the prevalence of the New Wave Of Swedish Death Metal. Nowhere is this more evident than in the work of Vomitory, who ? along with Dismember? have made it part of their agenda to keep the old-school death metal flag flying. The band was formed in 1989 by Ronnie Olsson (bass), Urban Gustafsson (3 October 1970, Karlstad, Sweden; guitar) and Tobias Gustafsson (b. 4 May 1974, Karlstad, Sweden; drums). Olsson switched to vocals with the addition of new bass player Bengt Sund, while guitarist Ulf Dalegren (b. 1 February 1973, Karlstad, Sweden) completed the original line-up. The quintet recorded a demo in 1992, leading to a one-EP contract with the Swiss Witchhunt label.
