Having first established herself as a hugely successful Music Row songwriter, Shaw achieved a long-held ambition by releasing her major label debut album in 1995. Earlier, she had formed her first band at the age of 12 and become a professional singer by 18. She was prompted by her musical mother, who found fame in her own right by starting the magazine Big Beautiful Women. However, her daughters success as a songwriter took some time to come to fruition. For 10 years she commuted between New York and Nashville, earning a meagre existence in the piano bars of the former to subsidise her trips to the country music capital. Her hard work eventually paid off after eight years, when she was offered a publishing contract.
