25 April 1928, Kinard, South Carolina, USA, d. 16 August 2005, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. In his youth Clements enjoyed jazz and swing music as well as country, which might explain his versatility as a fiddle player in later years. A friend who was a telephone operator overheard Bill Monroe say he was looking for a fiddle player, and she told Clements to contact Monroe immediately. Clements played with Monroe on the Grand Ole Opry in 1949 and recorded with him the following year. Clements spent six years with Monroe, albeit with brief interruptions. In subsequent decades he worked with Jim And Jesse, Faron Young, John Hartford and Earl Scruggs. and was featured on all three volumes of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s influential Will The Circle Be Unbroken (1972, 1989 and 2002 respectively).
