b Evanghelos Odyssey Papathanassiou, 29 March 1943, Volos, Greece. A child prodigy, Vangelis gave his first public performance on the piano at the age of six, and later studied classical music, painting and film direction at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens. In the early 60s he co-founded the formulaic beat outfit Forminx, who went on to become possibly Greeces most popular group during the mid-60s pop explosion with singles such as Yenka Beat and Geronimo Jenka. Forminx disbanded in 1967, but Vangelis continued performing session work for local singers including Aleka Kanelidou and Ricardo Credi. He formed a new group, the Papathanassiou Set, which included singer and bass player Demis Roussos, guitarist Anargyros Silver Koulouris, and drummer Lucas Sideras.
