14 March 1957, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Jazz singer Vanessa Rubin has built her reputation on a gruelling schedule of live appearances that have seen her tour from coast to coast in America. However, despite a strong following and a popular back catalogue, in 1997 her record label, RCA Records, attempted to launch her in the mainstream market. New Horizons featured some jazz standards, including a version of Phyllis Hymans classic Heres That Rainy Day, but also included contemporary pop and R&B tracks. As Rubin herself admitted, this was part of a process of getting some of my other voices out. She described the transition from working in jazz to working on more contemporary material as difficult: It was like having a vocabulary of 1, 000, then going in and using only 400 words.
