4 July 1963, Münster, Westfalen, Germany. Born to a banker father and a mother who sang opera, Lemper began studying piano and dance at the age of nine. Her formal musical studies took place in Salzburg, at the Dance Academy of Cologne, and in Berlin, and she studied classical theatre at the Max Reinhardt Seminary Drama School in Vienna. In her early teens, she performed in jazz clubs and piano bars and at 16 she joined punk outfit, the Panama Drive Band. For two years she acted at the Staatstheater, Stuttgart in plays by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Anton Chekhov. In 1983, she began a one-year stint in the Viennese production of Andrew Lloyd Webbers Cats, and in 1985 played the title role in a Berlin production of Peter Pan. The following year she met Jérôme Savary in Stuttgart and thereafter starred as Sally Bowles in his production of Cabaret in various cities, including Lyon, Düsseldorf and Paris.
