Biography

Urban Clifford Green, 8 August 1926, Mobile, Alabama, USA. Trombonist Green’s first major engagement was with Gene Krupa in the late 40s; from there he joined the Woody Herman band. In the early 50s he appeared on Buck Clayton’s celebrated Jam Session recordings. He then joined Benny Goodman, occasionally leading the band when Goodman was unwell. In the 60s and thereafter, Green freelanced, played in the studios, made numerous records, some of which were under his own name, gigged with Count Basie and led the reconstituted Tommy Dorsey orchestra. A masterly performer, especially in the upper register, Green has throughout his career consistently demonstrated that it is possible to blend deep jazz feeling with a seemingly perfect technique.
