Originally featuring Chris Spencer (vocals/guitar), Charly Ondras (d. June 1992; drums) and Peter Shore (bass/vocals), founded at college in 1988 in New York City, New York, USA, Unsane established a reputation as one of America’s most brutal bands. After playing ‘the usual East Coast firetraps’ they signed to Minneapolis independent label Treehouse Records who released their debut single, ‘This Town’, in 1989. The cover art featured San Francisco’s Zodiac serial killer, establishing a pattern of controversial packaging that has continued since. A debut album was recorded with Wharton Tieres for Circuit Records but was never released. Instead the band released singles for Glitterhouse, PCP and Sub Pop Records, before a self-titled album for Matador Records in 1991.
