Formed in 1999 by guitarist Brent Young, the original line-up of this Orlando, Florida-based alternative metal band had completely changed by the following year, with Young switching to bass and recruiting teenager Matt Heafy (Matthew Kiichi Heafy, 26 January 1986, Iwakuni, Yamaguchi, Japan; vocals/guitar) and Travis Smith (b. 29 April 1982, Bainbridge, Georgia, USA; drums). The new look line-up quickly established a presence on the US rock circuit with their fast-paced blend of thrash and progressive metal given a contemporary edge by the 16-year old Heafys guitar work. A 7-track demo EP followed at the start of 2003 before the trio signed to the German label Lifeforce and released Ember To Inferno. The debut album was an immediate hit with metalcore fans although the band was at pains to reject any association with such a transient music scene.
