Biography

A Highway 101 for the new millennium, US country rock band Trick Pony was formed in 1996 by Heidi Newfield (4 October 1970, Healdsburg, California, USA; vocals), Keith Burns (b. 16 November, Atlanta, Georgia, USA; guitar, vocals), and Ira Dean (b. 23 August, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; bass, vocals). Burns and Dean were both session musicians wanting to record their own music, and found the perfect vocal foil when they heard Newfield’s demo tape. Basing themselves in Nashville, the trio first made an impact in 2001 with the raucous single ‘Pour Me’. Newfield’s powerful vocals attracted the most attention on rollicking tracks such as ‘Party Of One’ and ‘One In A Row’, and the country ballad ‘Now Would Be The Time’, although both Burns (‘Can’t Say That On The Radio’) and Dean (‘Just What I Do’) proved equally capable of holding down a lead vocal.
