Biography
Despite a name that suggests a garage rock band, the Trash Can Sinatras, from Kilmarnock, Scotland, are more similar to the Glasgow independent pop of early 80s outfits such as Orange Juice and Josef K. Formed in 1987 by John Douglas (3 December 1963, Irvine, Scotland; guitar/vocals), Frank Reader (b. Francis Reader, 21 October 1965, Glasgow, Scotland; vocals/guitar; brother of Eddi Reader), Stephen Douglas (b. 21 February 1970, Irvine, Scotland; drums), Paul Livingston (b. 12 January 1971, Kilmarnock, Scotland; guitar) and George McDaid (bass), following acclaimed demo tapes the band resisted the overtures of several major record labels to sign with Andy McDonald at Go! Discs. The bands first two singles, the plaintive Obscurity Knocks and the similarly caustic Only Tongue Can Tell, were acclaimed.
