6 June 1946, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. At the age of 10 Levin began playing upright bass. Later, while in high school, he also played brass bass and the tuba, soloing with the school’s concert band. During this period, he was a member of the Greater Boston Symphony Youth Orchestra. After leaving school, Levin attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, playing while there in the Rochester Philharmonic. He attained a bachelor’s degree in music, meanwhile developing playing skills on a number of other instruments.

A fellow student at Eastman was Steve Gadd, through whom Levin began taking a serious interest in jazz and rock. This change of musical direction resulted in a move away from the upright bass for a Fender Precision bass.
