USA. Carey first worked professionally as one of the frequent keyboard contributors to Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow. He has also recorded solo, however, beginning in 1982 with a self-titled effort for the independent Rocshire Records (also home to Citizen Kane). His balanced marriage of hard rock riffs with extended keyboard patterns subsequently won him a contract with MCA Records. Afforded a proper budget, Some Tough City was a successful collection of AOR songs with intelligent, thoughtful lyrics. Despite this, the album failed to sell and Carey had been dropped from MCA’s roster by the following year.
