Biography
2 December 1948, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Horta played guitar from early childhood, influenced by older brother, Paulo Horta, a bass player with an interest in jazz. Attracting international attention through the 70s, in 1977 and again the following year Horta was highly rated in Melody Makers Worlds Best Guitarist polls. His concert appearances in the USA drew praise, he built a following in Japan, and also toured Europe. In Brazil he performed at 1985s second Free Jazz Festival in São Paulo, was organizer of the 1986 three-week Seminario Brasileiro Da Música Instrumental, held in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, under the sponsorship of the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) and the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture, and was also musical director of Planeta Terra, a major concert held in Parque Ibirapuera, São Paulo. Horta also spent time in New York where he studied at the Juilliard School of Music.
