Biography
28 May 1900, Florenceville, Louisiana, USA, d. 4 June 1939, New York City, New York, USA. As a child Ladnier played trumpet locally, as well as in nearby Mandeville where he was heard by George Lewis and Bunk Johnson. Later, during Johnson's renaissance, he claimed to have taught Ladnier. In 1917, Ladnier travelled to Chicago where he played in several bands, culminating, in 1924, with the band led by his idol, Joe "King" Oliver. Early in 1925, Ladnier was hired by Sam Wooding with whom he visited Europe. During the next few years Ladnier played in Germany, Poland, France and other European countries with, among others, Wooding, Benny Peyton, Louis Douglas, Noble Sissle and also played engagements back in the USA, mainly with Fletcher Henderson. In the early 30s, Ladnier teamed up with Sidney Bechet to co-lead a band they named the New Orleans Feetwarmers.
