Jeremy Blackall, 1976, Essex, England. One of several highly-talented UK singer-songwriters to emerge in the new millennium, McRaes political edge adds a welcome dimension to the genre in its contemporary form. The son of two practising vicars, McRae left his native Essex to attend university in London where he studied politics and was a member of several unsuccessful bands. After graduation he elected to strike out on his own, and was signed to DB Records after playing his home demos to producer Roger Bechirian. McRaes profile was raised when Scott Walker invited him to appear at June 2000s Meltdown Festival, and was further enhanced with the release of his self-titled debut album in October. This stark acoustic set eschewed any studio trickery or vocal dramatics, relying instead on McRaes gift for simple melodies and passionate delivery of his barbed observations of a flawed society.
